‘Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words can never hurt you’. That may perhaps be true, but words still holds sway over our souls. It soothes us, captivates us, and makes us think. They are our thoughts given expression, our belief made tangible. And in the darkness of one’s own deeds, in the confinement of their punishment… “A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.”

“Kind words are like honey–sweet to the soul and healthy for the body”Proverbs 16:24

No man, woman, or child under God’s eye is away from his judgment, and those who deserve His wrath, suffers. But the path of redemption can not only be barbed with thorns. For someone to step into the light, they need to be guided, by words of kindness. People, no matter their circumstance, have to be shown compassion to become compassionate. Writing to your incarcerated loved one often helps them understand and move on from their mistakes. Sweet written words soothes their guilt-ridden soul and gives them hope for a brighter tomorrow.

When you write to your incarcerated loved one, you also allow yourself to face the hurt and move on beyond it. Like a fresh canvas, an empty page gives you the opportunity to start afresh and begin writing a new chapter in your life. Helping you and your loved one move beyond the suffering and move towards a better future. “A person’s words can be life-giving water; words of true wisdom are as refreshing as a bubbling brook.”(Proverbs 18:4)

Words bring us near to wisdom. Words give our thoughts new direction and help us strive for better future by allowing us to reflect on the past. Write to your loved one in prison more often, let them know that all is not lost, show them that there is a better tomorrow to be made, one word at atime.
