Enjoy Breathtaking Views in Humantay lake Tours

Travel

Humantay Lake Tours are known by those who make the famous trail to reach Machu Picchu. Despite this, it is still not a destination so explored by Brazilians, unfortunately. It is a great option for a day trip for those who are in the famous capital of the Inca empire.

Humantay is located more than 4 thousand meters high at the foot of the mountain Salkantay.

The mountain is 6,200 meters high and the path to the lagoon ensures a breathtaking, cinematic look. The water is crystal clear and super cold, as the lagoon is “fueled” with the melting of the mountain. The bluish or greenish depending on the light that touches the water of Humantay leaves anyone impressed by its beauty.

From Mollepata it is necessary to follow the Soraypampa (3,900 meters high) site of the first night of travelers who opt for the Salkantay trail to reach Machu Picchu. If you go by car, it is a good option but for those who are not in the car, there are 2 options: hire a tour in one of the Cusco agencies or go on your own.

The tour is sold in various agencies in the city and usually lasts all day, starting early, usually at 4 in the morning. The return to Cusco is at 7:00 pm and the tour includes transportation, breakfast, and lunch.

Trekking until Humantay:

One of the best parts of Humantay Lake Tours is the trekking. The walk is not long, it is approximately 2 km per stretch but the climb is fairly steep and has virtually no flat part which makes the trail time-consuming. It took us an hour and a half to get up and 45 minutes to get off. You can enjoy taking pictures, stopping to rest.

Throughout the route the view is wonderful but the last meters are unforgettable. The snowy peak of Salkantay is giving the faces behind the stones until you get to see the crystal clear waters of Humantay.

The descent is also not the easiest. You have to be careful not to slip and run down to the camp. That forces the knee hard. The dirt road can also be a bit slippery.

This walk is worth the effort. If you do it calmly and with stops, you will get to the top for sure.

Some important tips for Humantay Lake Tours:

  • The lagoon is more than 4,000 meters high, so all care is little. Take coca leaves or the famous pill against altitude sickness. We recommend doing this trail about 2 to 3 days after arriving in Cusco, so your body can become accustomed to the height differences.
  • Go with trekking clothes. Comfortable boots, windbreaker, lightweight hats, and gloves, depending on the weather. It is a region of mountains with snow and very open.
  • Take water, chocolate and light foods along with you to the trail. In the camp, there is a small market if you need to buy something last minute.
  • Upon entering Mollepata, you need to buy the ticket to go to Humantay.
